Metatarsalgia

What is it?

Metatarsalgia is a term used to describe foot pain occurring at the ball of the foot. The metatarsals are long bones at the end of each toe. When pressure is applied to the end of the bone at the metatarsal head, pain is felt in the ball of the foot. Metatarsalgia is usually associated with pain, a burning sensation, numbness and often a callus under the second or third metatarsal head.

What causes it?

  • The first and fifth metatarsal bones typically carry more weight than the second, third and forth, however if the metatarsal ligaments are weak the foot may splay resulting in a fallen metatarsal arch.
  • Improper footware – constricting shoes; high-heeled shoes
  • Unsupportive footware
  • Overpronation
  • High rigid arches

What does treatment involve? (may include 1 or all of the following)

Metatarsal Pad

Metatarsal Insoles
